Mont Orford
A mature sugar maple forest blankets three-quarters of the small Parc National du Mont-Orford, 10km north of Magog via Hwy 141. Ski on Mont Orford (859m) in winter (passes $45) or hike in the summer: the chair-lift operates year-round. There's not much to see in the tiny town of ORFORD itself, but the summertime hostel on Hwy 141, Auberge du Centre d'Arts Orford, 3165 chemin du Parc (
819/843-3981 or 1-800/567-6155,
www.arts-orford.org ; Price: Up to $40; May– Oct), is a great base for exploring the park and Magog. You can also camp at one of the park's sites or off in the woods (
819/843-9855 or 1-800/655-6527,
www.sepaq.com ; $16–32). The only other accommodation options are more upscale in price and service: Auberge de la Tour, 1837 Alfred-Desrochers (
819/868-0763,
www.auberge-de-la-tour.com ; Price: $81-100), is a charming country inn, while the Auberge Au Lion d'Or, 2240 chemin du Parc (
819/843-6000 or 1-877/843-6000,
www.auliondor.com ; Price: $81-100), has a health spa and a heated outdoor pool. For dining, Tonnerre de Brest, 2197 chemin du Parc (
819/847-1234), serves up crêpes, mussels and fries, and La Mérise, at no. 2329 (
819/843-6288; dinner $10– $20), has regional cuisine, crêpes and, in winter, fondue.
