Old artefacts can be seen closer to the river, on the in the 1752 Maison Chevalier, a grand townhouse and one-time London Coffee House, where merchants would meet throughout the nineteenth century. Its rooms excellently depict interior scenes comprising period furniture, costumes and domestic objects – compare the plush drawing room of a nineteenth-century bourgeois family with the all-in-one common room a tradesman and his family might have occupied a century earlier. Take a peek, too, into the vaulted cellars, where local artisans sell traditional works.
