Fathom Five National Marine Park
Website: www.pc.gc.ca
Fathom Five National Marine Park comprises nineteen uninhabited islands and the waters that surround them at the end of the Bruce Peninsula, offshore from Tobermory. To protect the natural habitat, only Flowerpot Island, 4km from the mainland, has any amenities, with limited space for camping – six sites only – and a couple of short hiking trails that explore its eastern reaches. A delightful spot, Flowerpot takes its name from two pink-and-grey rock pillars that have been eroded away from its eastern shore, and are readily seen on the islet's hiking trails. From May to mid-October, Flowerpot Island is easily reached by boat from Tobermory. Several operators run regular boats out to the island, either dropping passengers off and then collecting them later or pausing at Flowerpot as part of a longer excursion – just stroll along Little Tub harbour until you find the service that suits. One reliable company is Blue Heron (519/596-2999, www.blueheronco.com). The return fare from Tobermory to Flowerpot is around $30, a few dollars more for the longer trips. Prospective campers need to make reservations at and get permits from the Diver Registration office. Both hikers and campers need to pack in their own food and drink.
