Both single $28 and double $40 rooms are available in several student blocks during the summer. Access to the university's sports facilities is included. The campus is located about 4km southwest of the Pagoda; the #2 Crosstown bus from the Water St terminal by the marina goes past the university campus.

Inside, there are flashes of its original Edwardian elegance, but most of the furnishings are modern and the rooms, reached along echoing corridors, are similar, as well as being large and comfortable. 4 Thunder Bay International Backpacker's Hostel Longhouse Village 1594 Lakeshore Drive 807/983-2042 www.thunderbayhostel.com This hostel has a friendly commune-like atmosphere and an attractive wooded setting 18km northeast of Thunder Bay. There's free use of bicycles, inexpensive Internet access, but no laundry. Nor is there any public transport here – ring ahead for advice. Year-round camping is available in the hostel grounds.
