The twin silver spires of the capital's Catholic cathedral, the Notre Dame Basilica, poke high into the sky. Completed in 1890, the cathedral is broadly neo-Gothic in style, its long and slender nave reaching a sort of ecclesiastical crescendo in a massive high altar piece, which is surrounded by dozens of pious wooden sculptures, many of which were carved by the carpenters and masons who worked on the Parliament Buildings.
