Plonked on top of Signal Hill is Cabot Tower, a short and stout stone structure built at the end of the nineteenth century to commemorate both John Cabot's landing of 1497 and Queen Victoria's Diamond Jubilee. The tower holds a small display on electronic signalling, and outside in the car park there's a plaque honouring Guglielmo Marconi, who confirmed the reception of the first transatlantic radio signal here in December 1901. The views back over the city and out to sea are nothing short of fabulous and half a dozen hiking trails are outlined on a notice board at the other end of the car park from the Cabot Tower.
