Newfoundland and Labrador

Arrival

St John's international airport is about 6km north of the city centre. There's a handy tourist information desk (open year round) inside the terminal building – in Arrivals – and this is a good place to pick up the comprehensive, annually updated and free Newfoundland & Labrador Travel Guide, which covers all the leading attractions, festivals, outdoor pursuits and accommodation. The desk also provides a free provincial road map, which is good enough for most purposes, though if you're intending to do a lot of driving it's useful to have a second source. There's no public transport from the airport to the city centre, but the taxi fare is only around $20.

There isn't a train station in St John's – Newfoundland doesn't have any trains – and neither is there a bus station: the island's only long-distance bus service, DRL Coachlines ( 709/263-2171 or 1-888/263-1854, www.drlgroup.com ) has a once daily bus from Channel-Port aux Basques that terminates at the St John's Crossroads Motel, about 5km northwest of the city centre at 980 Kenmount Rd. To get from the motel to the centre, take a taxi. Otherwise, an assortment of minibus/taxi companies combine to connect all of the island's larger settlements with St John's – and Newhook's Transportation minibuses ( 709/682-4877) run to the capital from the Argentia ferry.
