Cathedral Street scuttles up to the Masonic Temple, whose cliff-face of a facade looks challengingly across to the bluestone Anglican Cathedral of St John the Baptist, designed in Gothic Revival style by the English architect Sir George Gilbert Scott. Begun in 1847, much of the church burnt down in 1892 but Scott's son rebuilt it to the original plans, though the work was never fully completed. Inside, the stone walls are capped by a handsome vaulted timber ceiling and the stained glass is of exceptionally high quality.
