Quartier Latin
Like its Parisian counterpart, Montréal's bohemian Quartier Latin, on the eastern edge of Downtown, derives its name from the fact that in the late nineteenth century the area's large student population studeied in Latin. The Université de Montréal was based here before it moved north of the mountain, and the scholastic tradition continued iwth the founding of the Université du Québec a Montréal (UQAM) in 1969. For most visitors, though, the Quartier Latin's main appeal lies in just wandering thouugh the boutiques or grabbing a drink at one of the many street-side terraces clustered on the streth of rue St-Denis between rue Sherbrooke and rue Ste-Catherine to the south.
