Getting around

Saskatoon's compact city centre is best explored on foot, though it takes a little time to work out the street plan. Streets run east– west, avenues north– south. Edged to the south and east by the river and the adjacent strip of city park, the downtown core is bounded by 25th St East to the north and 1st Ave to the west. Numbered sequentially, these central streets are all suffixed "East", with their western extensions starting at either 1st Avenue or Idylwyld Drive. However, the avenues change from "South" to "North" right in the centre at 22nd Street East. For the suburbs, Saskatoon Transit ( 306/975-3100) operates an efficient and fairly comprehensive bus system, with a standard adult fare of $2.25 (pay on board). Cruises along the South Saskatchewan River, with its weir, sand bars and fast-flowing currents, are organized by Shearwater Boat Cruises on its ship, the Saskatoon Lady (May– Sept daily; for times call 306/549-2452 or 1-888/747-7572, www.shearwatertours.com ; $15); the boat departs for the one-hour trip from the wharf at the Mendel Art Gallery.
