    4 Bistro Bohemia 159 Osborne St 204/453-1944 Czech restaurant with great herring. Dishes for $8–14.

    5 Carlos & Murphy's 129 Osborne St 204/284-3510 www.carlosandmurphys.com Huge portions of Mexican food are $5–10; eat out on the pleasant patio or inside adjacent to the raucous and dingy bar.

    6 The Chocolate Shop 268 Portage Ave 204/942-4855 Winnipeg's oldest restaurant, dating its roots to 1918, where you can have your tea leaves and tarot read from 1 to 9pm. Diner-style establishment with great desserts. Popular karaoke night on Tues.

    7 The Forks Market The Forks A converted railway shed incorporating some cheap, pleasant bars selling a variety of fast food from Caribbean to Greek; try Yudyta's for Ukrainian and Tavola Calda for Italian food, both of which are dirt cheap.

    8 Kelekis 1100 Main St Another true Winnipeg institution, located around 1km north of town and dishing out greasy fries, hotdogs and enormous hamburgers to people from all walks of life – including Pierre Trudeau – since 1931. Dishes $3–9. Opening time: Closes 9.45pm

    9 Le Beaujolais 131 Blvd Provencher, St Boniface 204/237-6276 Winnipeg's premier French restaurant, with prices to match; reservations recommended. Dishes for $19–26.

    10 Le Café Jardin Centre Culturel Franco-Manitobain, 340 Blvd Provenche, St Boniface A large cultural complex housing an attractive open-air restaurant featuring traditional French-Canadian food – try the meat pies (tourtière) and the bread pudding. A full meal costs around $15. Opening time: Mon– Fri 11.30am–2pm

    12 Rogue's Gallery 432 Assiniboine Ave 204/947-0652 Hip coffeehouse serving light meals like falafels and burgers, and decorated with local art.

    13 Sofia's Caffè 635 Corydon Ave 204/452-3037 In the heart of Little Italy, this restaurant, with outdoor patio, serves large portions of veal, pasta and the like from $7.

    14 Author Pick Tavern in the Park The Pavilion in Assiniboine Park Perfectly situated in a glass atrium on the back of the fake Tudor Pavilion, and a favourite with Winnipeggers. Expensive, with a lavish buffet on Sundays. Dishes for $18–28.

    15 Tre Visi 173 McDermot Ave 204/949-9032 www.trevisirestaurant.com Tiny, extremely popular Italian restaurant with good atmosphere and food. Reservations essential. Dishes for $7.50–18.

    16 Wordsworth Building Cafeteria 405 Broadway Ave 204/944-8927 Overrun by lunching office workers thanks to the excellent, well-priced specials and extensive salad bar. Opening time: Open for breakfast and lunch only
