Alberta and the Rockies
Mount Robson Provincial Park
The extensive MOUNT ROBSON PROVINCIAL PARK borders Jasper National Park to the west and protects Mount Robson, at 3954m the highest peak in the Canadian Rockies. Its scenery equals anything anywhere else in the Rockies, and Mount Robson itself is one of the most staggering mountains you'll ever encounter. Facilities are thin on the ground, so stock up on food and fuel before entering the park. Around 16km beyond the park's western boundary Hwy 16 comes the Tête Jaune Cache, where you can pick up one of two immensely scenic roads: the continuation of Hwy 16 north to Prince George (for routes to Prince Rupert, northern BC and the Yukon), or Hwy 5, which heads south past Wells Gray Provincial Park to Kamloops and a whole range of onward destinations.
Most of the park's few other facilities are found near the infocentre (June to early Sept daily 9am–7pm;
250/566-4325 or 1-800/689-9025), located at the Mount Robson viewpoint near the western entrance to the park: a café/garage (May– Sept) and a fully serviced commercial campsite – Robson Shadows Campground (
250/566-9190 or 1-888/566-4821; $15; mid-May to early Oct), 30 nice sites on the Fraser River side of Hwy 16, 5km west of the park boundary. The 144-site Mount Robson Provincial Park Campground (
250/566-4325; $17; mid-May to early Oct) comprises two closely adjacent campsites – Robson River and Robson Meadows – and is situated further afield on Hwy 16, 22km north of Valemount. It offers hot showers and flush toilets; reservations can be made in advance. Another park campsite with the same name and the tag "Lucerne" (which has no reservations, dry toilets only and no showers; $14; May– Sept) is situated 10km west of the Alberta border on Hwy 16, just west of the eastern boundary of the park.
The only other beds in or near the park are Mountain River Lodge (
250/566-9899 or 1-888/566-9899,
www.mtrobson.com ; Price: $81-100), a B&B with five different rooms; the eighteen log-sided riverfront units (some with kitchens for $5 extra) at the Mount Robson Lodge (
250/566-4821 or 1-888/566-4821,
www.mountrobsonlodge.com ; Price: $101-125; May– Oct), which also organizes meals, river rafting, helicopter tours and horse riding.
