Bergama
Although frequently touted as a day-trip destination from Ayvalık, Bergama, site of the ancient city of Pergamon, rates a full day or two in its own right. The stunning acropolis of the tyrant, Eumenes II, is the main attraction, but there is a host of lesser sights and an old quarter of chaotic charm to detain you a little longer. Bergama is unpromising at first: the long approach to the centre reveals a dusty modern-looking place, and the monuments to which it owes its reputation are nowhere to be seen. In fact, most of ancient Pergamon is some distance from the modern town and takes a little effort to reach.
