The Mediterranean coast and the Hatay

Side

About 25km east of Aspendos, Side, one-time trysting place of Antony and Cleopatra, was perhaps the foremost of the Pamphylian cities. The ruins of the ancient port survive, but over the last few years Side has changed almost beyond recognition. These days, the resort has one of the highest tourist densities of any town in Turkey, and local people are beginning to recognize that their home has been ruined by indiscriminate development. However, many improvements have been made recently, and work is currently underway restoring the colonnades of Roman shops that flank the main street leading to the city gate. Despite the effects of package tourism, which have pushed up the prices of accommodation and food, Side remains a very attractive resort, especially if you can avoid the peak months of July and August. The beaches are superb, the ruins evocative and the nightlife lively.
