It's three-star standard, with modern rooms, aimed at tour groups; there are plans for a pool, nightclub and Internet café. Its undisputed advantage is the spectacular view from the front balconies and the vast restaurant terrace overlooking the Amasya valley. Price: €32-49

www.harsena.com Stunning former Ottoman residence with creaky floorboards and rooms furnished with period antiques, lace and linen curtains, and low-slung Ottoman beds. Some overlook the river, where you can breakfast on the balcony, but the best rooms are at the back under the floodlit rock tombs where you can sleep to the sounds of gentle guitar music from the garden below.
