    Map

Bahar Apart Hotel İstiklâl Cad 61 0212/245 0702 244 1708 Right in the heart of the action near the Taksim end of this buzzing street, with dark but comfortable rooms, separate sitting areas and tiny kitchens with tea/coffee-making facilities. Back rooms are much quieter. Good value for the area and size of accommodation. Price: €63-93

Büyük Londra Oteli Meşrutiyet Cad 117, Tepebaşı 0212/249 1025 www.londrahotel.com Palatial, mid-nineteenth-century townhouse. Many of the rooms are time-worn and cluttered with battered period furniture which gives the hotel its retro-bohemian charm, though some have been modernized and inevitably have lost their raffishness. Ernest Hemingway stayed here in 1922 when he was a journalist covering the Turkish War of Independence. Price: €63-93

Hotel Devman Asmalımescit Sok 52 0212/245 6212 www.taksim.com/?islem=mekan&g=772 Modern hotel in the arty nineteenth-century backstreets off İstiklâl Caddesi, with spotless blue-tiled bathrooms, coordinating furnishings and a decent open-buffet breakfast. Good value for the location, and handy for the nightlife. Price: €32-49

Author Pick Galata Residence Bankalar Cad, Hacı Ali Sok 27, Galata 0212/292 4841 www.galataresidence.com Beautifully restored late nineteenth-century building, offering one- and two-bedroom apartments with fully equipped kitchens. There's a roof-terrace restaurant and a café in the vaulted cellar, with cheaper apartments across the road more suited to business travellers. Weekly rates are €650 for a two-bed apartment, daily rates higher, longer stays cheaper still. Price: €123 and above

Monopol Hotel Meşrutiyet Cad 223, Tepebaşı 0212/251 7326 251 7333 Opposite the US Embassy, the comfortable rooms here have one to four beds, air conditioning, satellite TV and a fridge. Excellent value for such a prominent area, but the front rooms can get noisy at night when the Beyoğlu bars turn out. Price: €50-62

Pera Palas Meşrutiyet Cad 98–100, Tepebaşı 0212/251 4560 www.perapalas.com A contender for the most atmospheric hotel in İstanbul, the Pera deserves a visit if only for a coffee in the chandeliered American Bar or the exquisite tearooms Patisserie de Pera, and a visit to the "powder room". Built in the nineteenth century to accommodate Orient Express passengers, its rooms are marked with the names of famous occupants such as Agatha Christie and Graham Greene. Rooms start from €170, but package deals booked through tour operators abroad are better value. Price: €123 and above

Author Pick Hotel Silviya Asmalımescit Sok 54 0212/292 7749 243 6115 Very clean and friendly hotel, with spacious, carpeted rooms painted a soothing green, and spotless bathrooms with decent-quality fittings. The (very average) breakfast is taken in the small ground-floor TV room. Perfect situation for sampling the vibrant nightlife around, but quiet. Great value – recommended. Price: €25-31
