Ystad
Forty-five minutes by Pågatåg train from Malmö lies the well-preserved medieval market town of YSTAD, boasting a core of quaint cobbled lanes lined with hundreds of half-timbered cottages and a central square oozing rural charm. With the beautiful coastal region of Österlen stretching northeast from town in the direction of Kristianstad, and some excellent walking to the north, Ystad is a splendid place to base yourself for a day or so. It's also literary home of the popular fictional detective Kurt Wallander, and a dozen new episodes are to be filmed in and around town in 2006. Ystad is the departure point for ferries to Copenhagen, the Danish island of Bornholm, and to Poland.
