2 Gandhi Rådhusesplanaden 17 www.gandhi.se Despite its dingy basement, Gandhi offers excellent Indian food and is good value, too, with dishes around 150kr. Opening time: Closed July
3 Great Eastern Magasinsgatan 17 www.greateastern.se The best Chinese restaurant north of Stockholm. With a 70kr deal, it's busy at lunchtime, while in the evening there's chicken and beef dinners from 92kr, as well as a Mongolian barbecue.
4 Lottas Nygatan 22 www.lottas.nu This British-style pub is a great place to go drinking. The adjoining restaurant has fish and chips for 145kr, lobster for 115kr and good-value lunches for 75kr.
5 O'Leary's Kungsgatan 50 www.olearys.se A huge outlet of the popular sportsbar, with bar food from 90–150kr and outdoor seating.
6 Rex Bar och Grill Rådhustorget 090/12 60 50 www.rexbar.com Inside the town hall, this is the most popular – and stylish – place to eat. A pricey à la carte menu in which northern Swedish specialities are supplemented with bar meals from 90kr.
7 Sjöbris Kajplats 10 Excellent fish restaurant on board an old white fishing boat moored off Västra Strandgatan.
8 Skytten Rådhusesplanaden 17 090/13 56 60 www.skytten.se A friendly restaurant with great grilled meat and fish dishes (125–250kr).
9 Viktor Vasagatan 11 090/71 11 15 www.restaurangviktor.com Umeå's best – and priciest – restaurant specializes in exquisite Swedish cuisine, including imaginative fish dishes; mains from 280kr.
