The original attraction around which Umea's complex of museums has developed is the Friluftsmuseum (Open-Air Museum), a group of twenty regional buildings, the oldest being the seventeenth-century gatehouse on the way in. As usual, the complex is brought to life by people dressed in period costume – you can watch them preparing traditional unleavened tunnbröd in the bakery – while cows, pigs, goats, sheep and geese are kept in the yards and farm buildings. Look for the summer traditional dance evenings (Tues from 7pm), where the locals will be sure to whisk you off for a spin around the wooden dancefloor.
