The Bothnian coast

Getting Around

The train line hugs the coast until Härnösand, where services terminate. There are regular trains between Stockholm and Sundsvall, via Gävle, with just one daily service pressing on for Härnosand. Beyond Sundsvall, it's easier to continue by regular Norrlandskusten and Ybuss buses, which run to Härnösand, and then north – via the High Coast – to Umeå, Skellefteå and Luleå, or inland to Långsele, on the main line to Swedish Lapland and Narvik in Norway. There's a handy rail link from Sundsvall to Östersund, and other train connections are available in Umeå and Luleå. Island-hopping by ferry along the High Coast is a wonderful way to take in one of northern Sweden's most beautiful regions. Ferries between the Bothnian coast and Finland are limited to the year-round links from Umeå and Sundsvall to Vaasa.
