For a glimpse of social conditions a century ago, visit the Joe Hill Museum. Joe Hill, born in the house as Joel Hägglund in 1879, emigrated to the United States in 1902, where with a new name he went on to become a working-class hero whose songs and speeches served as rallying cries to comrades everywhere. Framed for murder in Salt Lake City, he was executed in 1915. The syndicalist organization to which he belonged runs the museum, a collection of standard memorabilia – pictures and belongings – given piquancy by the telegram announcing his execution.
