Stockholm
Tyska kyrkan
Address: Just off Västerlånggatan, on Tyska Brinken
Opening time: Daily noon–4pm
The Tyska kyrkan (German Church) was originally owned by Stockholm's medieval German merchants, when it served as the meeting place of the Guild of St Gertrude. A copper-topped red-brick building atop a rise, it abandoned its secular role in the seventeenth century when Baroque decorators got hold of it: the result, a richly fashioned interior with the pulpit dominating the nave, is outstanding. Sporting a curious royal gallery in one corner, designed by Tessin the Elder, it comes complete with mini palace roof, angels and the three crowns of Swedish kingship.
