The Mediterranean Museum (Medelhavsmuséet), a sparkling collection devoted to ancient Mediterranean cultures, notably Egypt, Cyprus, Greece and Rome. Its enormous Egyptian section covers just about every aspect of life in Egypt up to the Christian era, with several whopping great mummies and some attractive bronze weapons, tools and domestic objects from the time before the pharaohs. The Cyprus collections are the largest outside Cyprus itself, spanning a period of over six thousand years, and there are also strong displays of Greek, Etruscan and Roman art. A couple of rooms examine Islamic culture through pottery, glass and metalwork, as well as decorative elements of architecture, Arabic calligraphy and Persian miniature painting.
