1 Café Opera Gustav Adolfs Torg, Norrmalm www.cafeopera.se If your Gucci gear isn't too crushed and you can stand just one more Martini, join the queue outside the Opera House. Opening time: Daily till 3am
2 Dubliner Holländargatan 1 www.dubliner.se One of the busiest Irish pubs in town, with live music most evenings.
3 Icebar Nordic Sea hotel, Vasaplan, Norrmalm Icy, pricey but unique. Constructed from Jukkasjärvi river ice, this bar serves vodka cocktails and lingonberry juice in ice glasses. The entrance fee (95/140kr) includes a warm cape and a drink (alcoholic and non-alcoholic respectively); refills are 85kr.
4 Sturecompagniet Sturegatan 4 www.sturecompagniet.se Three floors of heaving bars, with something for everybody.
5 Tranan Karlbergsvägen 14, Östermalm www.tranan.se Atmospheric old workers' beer hall.
6 Gråmunken Västerlånggatan 18 Cosy café-pub, usually busy and sometimes with live music to jolly things along.
7 Kaos Stora Nygatan 21 DJs at weekends and unpretentious people out for a fun time.
8 Kleins Kornhamnstorg 51 One of the better bars in Gamla Stan, generally full with young professional Stockholmers dying to practise their English.
9 Magnus Ladulås Österlånggatan 26 www.magnusladulas.se Rough brick walls and low ceilings make this bar-cum-restaurant an appealing place for a drink or two.
10 Bonden Bar Bondegatan 1B www.bondenbar.se Just along from the Bonden restaurant and down a series of steps. A good choice for an evening beer before strutting your stuff on the adjoining dance floor.
11 Folkhemmet Folkhemmet hotel, Renstiernas gata 30 Trendy hangout for twenty- to thirty-somethings. Inordinately popular at weekends.
12 Gröne Jägaren Götgatan 64 Some of the cheapest beer in Stockholm; storstark is just 24kr until 9pm. Perhaps inevitably, the clientele tends to get raucously drunk.
13 Kvarnen Kvärnen hotel, Tjärhovsgatan 4 Busy beer hall with two bars.
14 O'Learys Götgatan 11–13 www.olearys.se Södermalm's most popular Irish pub – great fun and within stumbling distance of the nearby T-bana at Slussen.
15 Pelikan Pelikan hotel, Blekingegatan 40 A fantastic old beer hall full of character – and characters.
16 WC Skånegatan 51 Very busy at weekends with people from across town, and handy for the restaurants around Skånegatan and Blekingegatan.
