The Great Synagogue
Address: Stora Nygatan

Among all the architectural finery of Stora Nygatan sits mainland Sweden's oldest synagogue, the Great Synagogue, inaugurated in 1855. This simple domed structure hides one of the most exquisite interiors of any European synagogue: the ceiling and walls are a rich mixture of blues, reds and gold, with Moorish patterns stunningly interwoven with Viking leaf designs. An impressive restoration programme has brought the original colours into brilliant relief. Sadly, security concerns mean that it can only be visited by calling first.
