Boats leave Lilla Bommen harbour for the popular half-hour excursion to the island fortress of Nya Elfsborg . Built in the seventeenth century to defend the harbour and the city, the surviving buildings have been turned into a museum and café. There are tours in English (included in the price of the boat trip) given by guides in period dress around the square tower, chapel and prison cells.
