The rather dreary Natural History Museum prides itself on being the city's oldest, dating from 1833. Its endless cases of stuffed birds seem particularly depressing after the squawking, living ones outside, and the only worthwhile item is the world's only stuffed blue whale, which stranded on a nearby beach in 1865 and now contains a Victorian sitting room complete with red velvet sofas (open just once a year).
