1 Bishops Arms Västra Larmgatan 1 (and Avenyn 36) Attached to the glamorous Elite Plaza hotel, this pub boasts a wide range of beers. It's all faux "olde Englishe" inside, but very nicely done.
2 Dubliners Östra Hamngatan 50b For a while now, Swedes have been overtaken with a nostalgia for all things old and Irish – or at least a Swedish interpretation of what's old and Irish. This is the most popular exponent.
3 The Palace Brunnsparken www.palace.se The rather splendid former home of the Furstenburgs and their art galleries is a very popular spot, with live bands on Thursdays.
4 Brasserie Lipp Avenyn 8 www.brasserielipp.se No longer the hippest place on Avenyn, Lipp is expensive and so attracts a slightly older crowd – but a crowd it is, especially during summer.
5 Hard Rock Café Avenyn 10 A very loud young crowd fills this outpost of T-shirt fame. Not a place for a drink and a chat, unless you want to stand out on the street.
6 Nivå Avenyn 9 www.restaurangniva.com Stylish, popular bar with a modern interior heavy on mosaic decor, and a bar and restaurant on different levels.
7 Ruby Nuevo Latino Bar Avenyn 24 The glitzy restaurant/bar of the Scandic Rubinen hotel serves up great Mediterranean food and tapas snacks.
8 Studs Götabergsgatan 17, off Engelbrecksgatan behind Vasa Church This is the hub of Gothenburg student life, with a pub, bar and restaurant serving cheap beer. If you haven't got student ID, friendly bluffing should get you in.
9 Beefeater Inn Plantagegatan 1 www.beefeaterinn.com One of the bevvy of British-oriented neighbourhood pubs that are very in-vogue with Swedes generally. This one really goes overboard, with a stylistic mishmash of red-telephone-box doors, tartan walls and staff in kilts.
10 Cigarren Järntorget 6, opposite the Folketshus Looks as if it's been here forever, but has actually only existed since the revamping of this classic, old workers' square. Huge range of cigars, and lots of coffees and teas alongside the beers and wines.
11 Gillestugan Järntorget 6 Cosy and panelled without being over the top, this bar has plenty of outdoor seating, and offers full meals such as beef fillet at 98kr or seafood burgers at 125kr.
12 Stars & Stripes Järntorget 4 Though rather unappealing on the outside and slightly rough within, Stars & Stripes boasts some remarkable painted ceilings and a very down-to-earth atmosphere.
13 The Rover Andra Långgatan 12 www.therover.se Run-of-the-mill Anglo-Irish pub selling Boddingtons, with other lagers, ales and cider on tap, plus a wide range of bottled beers. Lamb, steaks and trout dishes from 70kr.
