Getting Around

Trains

Apart from flying, trains are the quickest way to get around Sweden's vast expanses. The service is excellent, especially on the main routes, and prices not too expensive – a standard-class single from Stockholm to Gothenburg, for example, starts at 320kr if booked in advance. Several companies operate trains in Sweden; if you're trying to work out a train-and-bus journey and want to ensure smooth connections, visit www.resplus.se . It's worth picking up the Resplus timetable, free from any train station. Published twice yearly, this is an accurate and comprehensive list of the most useful train services in the country. Otherwise, each train route has its own timetable leaflet, also available free from any station.

SJ (Statens Järnvägar – Swedish State Railways; 0771/75 75 75, www.sj.se ) has an extensive network of routes, running right from the far south of the country up to Östersund and Sundsvall in central Sweden. Connex ( 0771/26 00 00, www.connex.se ) operates the Norrlandståget service from Gothenburg via Stockholm, Gävle and Boden to Gällivare and Kiruna in Swedish Lapland, and across the border to Narvik in Norway. Tågkompaniet ( 0771/44 41 11, www.tagkompaniet.se ) runs trains on several smaller lines in central Sweden, including Sundsvall– Östersund and Gävle– Falun– Borlänge– Mora. T

In Skåne in southern Sweden, Pågatåg ( www.sj.se ) operates trains between Helsingborg, Lund, Malmö and Ystad. Finally, Inlandsbanan ( 063/19 44 12, www.inlandsbanan.se ) runs trains on the summer-only (mid-June to early Sept) route between Kristinehamn near Karlstad via Mora and Östersund to Gällivare in Swedish Lapland, and if you're in the country during the summer months, then travelling at least a section of the Inlandsbanan is a must. InterRail holders under 26 travel free; ScanRail pass holders get a 25 percent discount on the Inlandsbanankort (Inland Railway Card; full price 1195kr). Available on board the trains, this card gives unlimited travel on the line for fourteen days. Individual tickets cost 108kr per 100km and seat reservations are free if booked in advance, otherwise 50kr.
