Getting Around

Driving

Driving presents few problems: roads are excellent, and the only real dangers are the reindeer and elk that can wander onto the tarmac. Keep to the speed limits and watch out around dawn and dusk particularly – if you hit one you'll know about it; every year, dozens of drivers are hospitalized or killed after hitting elk. As for documentation, you need a full licence and the vehicle registration document; an international driving licence and insurance "green card" are not essential. Speed limits are 110kph on motorways, 90kph and 70kph on other roads, 50kph in built-up areas; note that there are hundreds of speed cameras across Sweden, mainly in the south. It's compulsory to use dipped headlights during daylight hours (on rented cars they will probably come on automatically) and, if you are taking your own car from Britain, remember to get the beam of your headlights adjusted to suit driving on the right.
