Central and northern Sweden
Östersund
ÖSTERSUND is one of central Sweden's most agreeable towns, It's well worth spending a day or two in what is the last large town until Gällivare, some 700km to the north inside the Arctic Circle – if you're heading north this is your final chance to indulge in a bit of high life, since the small towns and villages beyond have few of the entertainment or culinary possibilities available here. Östersund is also a major transport hub: the E14 highway cuts through town, offering good links to Sundsvall and west to Trondheim in Norway, while as well as the summer Inlandsbanan service there are trains west to Åre, Storlien and on to Trondheim in Norway, east to Sundsvall and south to Stockholm and Gothenburg, plus express buses north to Gällivare, which run all year and are a better option than the Inlandsbanan if you're in a hurry.
