Sweden Guide
Central and northern Sweden
Arrival
Swedline (
www.swedline.se ) flies between Gällivare's Lapland airport, 10km east of the centre, and Stockholm. Gällivare's train station is right next to the tourist office at Centralplan 3 (mid-June to mid-Aug 8am–10pm; mid-Aug to mid-June Mon– Fri 9am–4pm;
0970/166 60,
www.visit.gellivare.se ), which stays open until the Inlandsbanan train from Östersund arrives. Here you can get good free maps, hiking information and tickets for the mine tours. They can also fix you up with a private room for around 150kr per person, plus a booking fee of 25kr. The popular Rallarrosenyouth hostel (
0970/143 80,
www.explorelapland.com ; bookings required) is behind the train station at Barnhemsvägen 2, just across the river; it has dorm beds (150kr) in several cabins as well as private rooms (Price: under Kr500). The hostel doubles as an adventure centre and rents out bikes and canoes, and can arrange dog-sledding and snow scooter safaris. Nearby, Gällivare Camping (
0970/100 10,
www.gellivarecamping.com ) has year-round cabins (450kr for 2 people). If you have your own transport, the most interesting place to stay is in the simple wooden huts at the reconstructed shanty town, Kåkstan, on Malmberget, the hill just to the north of the town centre, where a four-berth hut costs around 350kr; contact the tourist office.
