Around Gothenburg

The Bohuslän coast

A chain of islands linked by a thread of bridges and short ferry crossings make up the county of Bohuslän and, despite the summer crowds, it's still easy enough to find a private spot to swim or bathe. Sailing is a popular pastime among the Swedes, many of whom have summer cottages here, and you'll see yachts gliding through the water all the way along the coast. Another feature of the Bohuslän landscape you can't fail to miss is the large number of churches – for long stretches these are the only buildings of note. Dating from the 1840s to 1910, these are mostly simple white structures with little variation in design.

Travelling up the coast by train is feasible, and though buses also cover the coast, services are sketchy and infrequent. If you really want to explore Bohuslän's most dramatic scenery, you need a car. From Gothenburg, the E6 motorway is the quickest route north, with designated scenic routes leading off it every few kilometres.
