As the national collection, the Museo Arqueológico Nacional holds some very impressive pieces, among them the celebrated Celto-Iberian busts known as La Dama de Elche and La Dama de Baza, and a wonderfully rich hoard of Visigothic treasures found at Toledo. The presentation and layout may be traditional, but the museum contains some outstanding Roman, Egyptian, Greek and Islamic finds. In the gardens, downstairs to the left of the main entrance, is a reconstruction of the Altamira Caves in Cantabria, with their prehistoric wall-paintings.
