Although the site of A Coruña was home to the Iron Age Artabri tribe, one of whose hillforts can still be seen at nearby Elviña, it was the Romans who built the landmark Torre de Hercules. Said to be the world's only still-functioning Roman lighthouse, it dominates the northern tip of the headland, amid a sweeping expanse of grass and heather. It's an impressive spectacle, though it was rebuilt in the eighteenth century and only a few foundation stones from the Roman era remain on show. The views from the top, out over the Atlantic and back to the city, are superb.
