Nightlife

Camelot c/Bordadores 3 A fun discoteca, housed in part of the Convento de las Úrsulas. The interior, an ex-church, is a mix of medieval and industrial decor, with a bar on the first floor, above the dance-floor. The bar's open from 6pm.

Clavel Ocho c/Clavel 6 One of several amenable bars that put out tables in two interlinked squares just below the market, underneath the San Julian church walls. A good place to start the evening.

Author Pick El Corrillo c/de Meléndez 18. This arty café-restaurant morphs into a hip jazz club at night, with other live acts ranging from blues bands to poetry readings. It's open from 9am for drinks and food, and there's a terraza around the back on Plaza San Benito.

Country Bar c/Arco de la Lapa 5 Good for folk, rock, punk and anything vaguely alternative; downstairs you'll find an atmospheric tavern covered wall-to-wall in swirling mosaics (the owner is a Gaudí fanatic).

Cubic Club c/Iscar Peyra 30 Salamanca's electro-techno joint, with international guest DJs. Opening time: 11pm till very late

Irish Rover Rua Antigua 11 The Irish pub opposite La Clerecía is known as "The Rov", by its expat and student fans. It opens around 5pm, puts on up-and-coming Spanish bands, and converts to a raucous late-night discoteca at weekends.

Posada de las Ánimas Plaza San Boal 7 The terraza is a bit hidden away from the main drag (and shared with the equally likeable bar Juanita), and don't miss the weird interior of cherubs, chandeliers and dolls' houses.

La Regenta c/Espoz y Mina 25 A stylish recreation of a nineteenth-century literary café and bar, with thick red velvet drapes and wood panelling, and tables lit by dripping candles.
