Salamanca's most beautiful cloisters are in the Convento de las Dueñas. Built in the sixteenth century on an irregular pentagonal plan, the imaginative upper-storey capitals are wildly carved with rams' heads, scallop shells, winged cherubs, mythical beasts and an extraordinary range of human faces. The nuns sell boxes of crumbly almond pastries from a booth next to the entrance.
