Cantabria and Asturias
Arrival
The RENFE and FEVE train stations stand side by side on the Plaza Estaciónes, just back from the waterside 500m west of the old town, and in the shadow of an escarpment that hides the main roads. A largely subterranean bus station (942 211 995; www.santandereabus.com) faces them directly across the square, while ferries from England dock nearby (Brittany Ferries). An extensive network of city buses covers all areas; routes #1, #3, #4, #7 and #E shuttle between the centre and El Sardinero.
Ryanair flights from London and Dublin swoop across the bay to land in full view of the city at the Aeropuerto de Santander, just 4km south at Parayas on the Bilbao road. Several car rental companies have outlets there; a taxi into town costs €15–18, and buses run nonstop to the bus station (6.30am–10.45pm; €1.60).
