    1 Bodegas Almau Estébanes 9 Spirited tapas bar established in 1870, with a handsome, tiled interior that gives way to a bustling outdoor area strewn with pebbles and barrel-tables. A range of tasty tapas, including their speciality anchovies. Opening time: Mon– Sat 11am–2pm & 7pm– midnight

    2 Bodegón Azoque Casa Jiménez 6 Upscale tapas bar, with a smart business crowd weekdays sipping quality wine at the rustic, wood-encased bar. Barrels of wine stand at the door, while diners graze on sardines and the celebrated jamón de Jabugo. Opening time: Daily 11.30am– midnight

    3 La Bodeguilla de Santa Cruz c/Santa Cruz 3 A characterful bar that looks like a cross between Aladdin's cave and an old apothecary, serving a creative selection of beautifully presented tapas and raciones. Opening time: Mon– Fri 8pm– midnight, Sat 1–3.30pm & 8pm– midnight

    4 Los Borrachos Paseo Sagasta 64 976 275 036 This is a bit of a trek south of the old town, but worth it for the unique blend of old-world charm and special game dishes such as venison, boar and pheasant. Price: €45 and up for a meal with wine Opening time: Closed Sun eve & Mon lunch

    5 Café Astoria c/San Vicente de Paúl 20 Stylish eatery with modern art on the walls, a great salad selection, an unusual variety of reasonably priced, French-influenced dishes and lavish tapas. Opening time: Mon– Sat 8.30am–11pm (until 1am weekends)

    6 Author Pick El Calamar Bravo c/Moneva 5; due to move to the nearby Cinco de Marzo A hugely popular and inexpensive stand-up tapas bar with outstanding calamares sandwiches (€2.50) and patatas bravas (€1.50), all smothered in mayonnaise and piquante salsa. Opening time: Daily till 11pm

    7 La Cueva en Aragón c/Libertad Lively tapas joint that's also known as "El Champi", for its signature tapa – succulent mushrooms topped with a powerful garlic sauce.

    8 El Fuelle c/Mayor 57 Earthy local cocina, specializing in no-frills Aragonese cuisine, especially meat dishes. Great atmosphere and value for money. Opening time: Closed Sun eve & Mon

    9 Author Pick Gran Café Zaragoza c/Alfonsin I 25 Historic, genteel café, with a nineteenth-century interior of dark-wood ceilings and a burnished wooden bar, with large windows that overlook the street. Opening time: Daily 8.30am–10pm

    10 Montal Torre Nueva 29 976 298 998 An old shop dating from 1919 that becomes an alluring restaurant at night, with a tapas bar on ground level and a Renaissance balcony for an elegant dinner of regional fare – reservations are essential.Price: Around €35
