    1 Bar-Restaurante Sevilla c/Oficios 12 958 221 223 One of the few surviving prewar restaurants, and once a haunt of Lorca's, this is a pleasant restaurant with an outdoor terrace – beneath the walls of the Capilla Real – in the evenings. Price: Menú around €40 Opening time: Closed Mon

    2 Café au Lait Callejón de los Franceses 31 Laid-back French-style café-bar with pleasant palm-shaded terrace; serves a good-value breakfast complete with domestic or foreign newspapers, and later does economical pizzas, tapas and crêpes.

    3 Casa Cepillo c/Pescadería 8, off c/Príncipe Cheap and cheerful comedor with an excellent-value menú; the soups are especially good. Price: Menú €9.50

    4 Mesón La Alegría c/Moras 4 This economical mesón is a favourite of granadinos working nearby and specializes in carnes a la brasa (charcoal grilled meats).

    5 Mesón El Trillo del Reca Callejón del Aljibe del Trillo 3 958 225 182 Enchanting little mid-priced restaurant in an Albaicín carmen offering Basque-influenced cuisine: bacalao al pil-pil (salted cod with garlic) is a signature dish. Has outdoor tables on a delightful garden patio shaded by pear and quince trees.

    6 Mesón Yunque Plaza San Miguel Bajo Owned by a flamenco singer, this medium-priced place has a great atmosphere, with tasty meat and fish dishes served at indoor and outdoor tables on a delightful square.

    7 Naturi Albaicín c/Calderería Nueva 10 Imaginative vegetarian cooking, such as fine salads and stuffed mushrooms, at reasonable prices. Take tea or coffee afterwards at the nearby tea-houses.Price: €7 menú

    8 Restaurante León c/Pan 3 Long-established cordobés restaurant (occupying premises on both sides of the street) and serving many carne de monte (game) dishes.Price: Good-value menú €10

    9 Author Pick Restaurante-Bar Las Tomasas Carril de San Agustín 4 958 224 108 Mid-priced restaurant serving cocina andaluz in a huge and beautiful carmen with a stunning terrace view of the floodlit Alhambra at night. Ajo blanco (white gazpacho) is a speciality. You can also nurse a tinto de verano here if you don't want to eat. Opening time: Closed Sun, also lunch in July & Aug

    10 Author Pick Restaurante-Marisquería Cunini c/Pescadería 9 958 267 587 One of Granada's most established and outstanding upmarket restaurants (booking advised), serving mainly fish, with a superb tapas bar attached.

    11 Bar Ferroviaria c/Lavadero Tablas 1, off c/Tablas. This is in fact a pensioners' club for former railway workers, but don't let that put you off – behind the anonymous exterior you'll find an amazingly cheap menú that attracts workers and students for miles around; if the paella is on, it's your lucky day. Opening time: Daily 9.30am–8.30pm (lunch 1.30–4pm); closed AugPrice: Menú (€4.50

    12 El Carmen de San Miguel Plaza Torres Bermejas 3 958 226 723 One of Granada's noted places to eat, with a fabulous terrace looking out over the city (book a frontline table). The restaurant's signature dish, conejo relleno de langostinos escabechados con ostras y limón (rabbit with prawns and oysters), typifies its innovative approach (occasionally overdone) to andaluz cuisine. Price: Seasonal menu; mains €16–25 Opening time: Closed Sun

    13 La Mimbre Paseo del Generalife s/n With a delightful terrace shaded by willows (mimbres), this is one of the best restaurants on the Alhambra hill. The food is good, but they are sometimes overwhelmed in high season. There's a decent menú for around €17.50, which you may need to ask for.

    14 La Ninfa Campo del Principe Popular Italian restaurant for pizzas, pasta and salads that puts out tables on this pleasant plaza, and is often full to bursting at weekends.

    15 Seis Peniques Plaza de Padre Suárez Quite a good little bar-restaurant with a small terrace facing the Casa de los Tiros; serves a decent menú.Price: Menú €8.50
