La Judería
Address: Between the Mezquita and the beginning of Avda. del Gran Capitán
La Judería, Córdoba's old Jewish quarter, is a fascinating network of lanes – more atmospheric and less commercialized than Seville's Barrio Santa Cruz, though souvenir shops are gaining ground. Near its heart, at c/Judías 20, the sinagoga (Tues– Sat 9.30am–2pm & 3.30–5.30pm, Sun 9.30am–1.30pm; €0.30, free with EU passport), is one of only three synagogues – the others are in Toledo – that survived the Jewish expulsion from Spain in 1492. Though minute, it has some fine stuccowork and retains its women's gallery. Outside is a statue of Maimónides, the Jewish philosopher, physician and Talmudic jurist, born here in 1135.
