Findhorn

At one end of a wide sweep of sandy beach, FINDHORN is a tidy village with some neat fishermen's cottages and a delightful harbour dotted with moored yachts. Findhorn is best known, however, for the controversial Findhorn Foundation, based beside the town's caravan park about a mile before you reach the village itself. A permanent community of a couple of hundred people, with a well-developed series of courses and retreats on subjects ranging from astroshamanic healing to organic gardening, the Foundation draws eight thousand or so visitors each year. Visitors are generally free to stroll around the community, but the guided tour is worthwhile (April– Nov Mon, Wed & Fri– Sun 2pm; no Sun tour in April, Oct & Nov; £3); you can also guide yourself via a booklet (£3) available from the shop or visitor centre (Mon– Fri 10am–5pm, also open Sat & Sun 1–4pm in summer; 01309/690311, www.findhorn.org ), which also has information on staying within the community.
