Getting around
River cruises
From late April to early October (weather permitting), river boat cruises offer a superb view of such landmarks as the Kremlin, the monument to Peter the Great, the Cathedral of Christ the Saviour, Moscow University, the Novodevichiy Convent and Novospasskiy Monastery – plus swathes of Moscow's new business districts, with snazzy postmodern architecture. The boats (called kater, or cutters) have an enclosed lower deck with a snack bar and an open-air top deck, so you can enjoy the trip in any weather – the only distraction being nonstop commentary in Russian. Tickets are sold at the river termini beside ploshchad Yevropy and the bridge near the Novospasskiy Monastery. You can get off (or board, if you have a ticket) at any of the landing stages in between: at the foot of the Sparrow Hills; Frunzenskaya naberezhnaya; Gorky Park near Krymskiy val; Bolshoy Kamenniy most across the river from the Kremlin; or Ustinskiy most near the Rossiya Hotel and Red Square.
On weekends and holidays, boats sail every half hour from 10am–8pm; weekday schedules are a lot less frequent. If you can't find a timetable posted, you could try asking the Capital Shipping Company (
277 39 02) that operates the service.
