The Polish Carpathians
Rzeszów
The largest city in southeastern Poland and administrative capital of "Subcarpathia" (Podkarpackie), predominantly modern Rzeszów may lack the kind of historical punch delivered by some of Poland's other regional centres but it still offers plenty to enjoy. Its handsome Rynek bears witness to the city's long history as a local market centre, and is as lively as any central square in the country when cafés and bars spill out onto its paving stones in summer. The area's best museums are nevertheless a bus ride away in Łańcut or Sanok, and southeastern Poland's main attraction – the mountains – lie well to the south. As a place to arrive, however, Rzeszów is perfectly pleasant. There's an acceptable choice of hotels and restaurants, some characterful places to drink, and onward transport is problem-free.
