    1 Author Pick Abrams' Tower ul. Kraińskiego 14 www.abramstower.pl Excellent authentic Tex-Mex and fusion dishes and good wines served in a medieval city wall tower by a Californian artist. Try the excellent chipotle shrimp tacos with avocado (24zł). Find the tower hidden in the park just south of the market hall. Opening time: Open Sun– Wed 4pm– midnight, Thurs– Sat til later

    2 Karczma Lwówska Rynek 4 No-nonsense meat-and-potatoes mains, well-priced, in an interior decked out with Ukrainian folk motifs and sepia photographs of old Lwów. The stuffed cabbage leaves (goląbki, 22zł) are excellent. Opening time: Daily 11am– midnightPrice: Mains around 25zł

    3 Kardamon ul. Włodkowica 8. Extravagantly decorated old villa with dining in several rooms and a large garden; the food is fusion and varied. Skip the sandwiches but do try the steaks or fish dishes. Price: Mains 25–45zł Opening time: Daily 11.30am–10pm, Thurs– Sat til 11pm

    4 Author Pick Od Nova ul. Włodkowica 9 www.odnova.pl Popular bar/restaurant attracting a trendy, mixed crowd enjoying cocktails, pasta and Asian dishes; the Siamese papardelle (24zł) and duck brochettes (38zł) are worth a try. Opening time: Daily 11am–11pm, Fri & Sat til midnight

    5 Oregano ul. Kuźnicza 57/58 www.oregano.com.pl Cosy basement restaurant decorated with antique-shop bric-a-brac, and offering reliably tasty pizzas and salads. Entered from ul. Igielna. Opening time: Daily noon–11pm

    6 Piwnica Świdnicka Rynek-Ratusz 1 www.piwnicaswidnicka.com This famous old restaurant under the town hall is a city institution, serving up a filling range of meat-heavy Polish favourites and some international dishes too. It's on the formal side, and fairly pricey. Price: 50–80zł Opening time: Daily noon–11pm

    7 Pod Złotym Jeleniem Rynek 44 Cosy square-side restaurant with open-plan grill and dining area, herbs hanging from the ceiling and rustic-looking paintings on the walls. Grilled slabs of pork and beef mains (25–60zł) form the mainstay of the menu. Opening time: Daily noon to midnight

    8 Afryka ul. Kiełbaśnicza 24. Dozens of types of freshly ground coffee and tea to take out or drink in on low stools. Tasty home-baked cakes, too. Opening time: Daily 9.30am–10pm, Fri & Sat til midnight

    9 Bazylia ul. Kuźnicza 42 Modern, minimalist, order-at-the-counter place, offering a big but functional choice of canteen food from pierogi to pork chops. Huge windows offer nice views to the main university building, and it's correspondingly full with snacking students. Opening time: Daily 8am–8pm

    10 Cafetarie Chic ul. Katedralna 6. Lovely, classic café that makes a good stop for coffee and cakes when exploring the cathedral area. Open daily 10am–9pm.

    11 Kurna Chata ul. Odrzańska 17 www.kurnachata.pl Folksy decor, wooden tables and a choice selection of Polish staples, from bigos and placki to more substantial chicken fillets and steaks. Cheap, filling, and often busy. Opening time: Daily Tues– Fri 10am–11.30pm, Mon, Sat & Sun from 10am

    12 Soul Cafe pl. Solny 4 Relaxing, upmarket place serving decent coffee, dainty canapés and fancy cakes. Opening time: Mon– Thurs 7.30am–10pm, Fri & Sat til 11pm, Sun 10am–10pm

    13 STP ul. Kuźnicza 10 The Szybko Tanio Pysznie (‘Fast Cheap Delicious') self-service canteen has tasty Polish nosh paid by weight (29zł per kilo); half price from 9pm. Opening time: Daily 10am–10pm

    14 Vega Rynek-Ratusz 27a Good, inexpensive vegetarian haunt with plant-filled interior just to the right of the town hall's famous facade. Opening time: Mon– Sat 8am–7pm, Sun 9am–5pm

    15 Witaminka Rynek 50. Not particularly rich in vitamins, this is an enjoyably old-fashioned cake and ice cream emporium right on the main square. Opening time: Mon– Sat 9am–9pm, Sun 11am–9pm
