The north and the Frisian Islands
Schiermonnikoog
Until the Reformation, the island of SCHIERMONNIKOOG belonged to the monastery of Klaarkamp on the mainland. These days Schiermonnikoog's only settlement is a prim and busy village bordering on long stretches of muddy beach and sand dune to the north and farmland and mud flats to the south. At low tide, these motionless pools of water reflect the colours in the sky, particularly atmospheric at dawn and dusk. Schiermonnikoog is the smallest of the Frisian islands at 16km long and 4km wide, and, once you're clear of the weekend homes that fringe the village, it's a wild, uncultivated place.
