Noord-Holland
Getting around
Getting around Noord-Holland by public transport is easy enough, with trains linking all the major settlements and buses filling in the gaps. Distances are small, so the majority of Noord-Holland is easily visited on day-trips from Amsterdam, but to make the most of the province you're much better off staying over at least a couple of nights – Haarlem, Edam, Enkhuizen and Den Hoorn on Texel are the four most appealing bases. If you want to continue north or east, the two dykes that enclose the Markermeer and the IJsselmeer carry handy road links. The former, the Markerwaarddijk, connects Enkhuizen with Lelystad on the reclaimed Flevoland polders, and the latter, the Afsluitdijk, makes the thirty-kilometre trip from Den Oever to the province of Friesland.
