Netherlands Guide

Entry requirements

Citizens of the UK, Ireland, Australia, New Zealand, Canada and the US do not need a visa to enter the Netherlands if staying for three months or less. However, you do need a passport valid for at least six months after your arrival, a return airline ticket and/or funds deemed to be sufficient for your stay.

If you intend to stay beyond three months, you must apply for a temporary residence permit (a "VTV") within three days of your arrival in the Netherlands. Go to your local Aliens Police office (Vreemdelingenpolitie) armed with your birth certificate and proof that you have the funds to finance your stay in the Netherlands, a fixed address, and health insurance. For further information, visit the Ministry of Foreign Affairs website www.minbuza.nl .

If you intend to work, you will need a work permit, for which your employer must apply on your behalf. The exceptions to this rule are the work schemes set up for Australian, New Zealand and Canadian citizens aged 18–30, who can stay for up to 12 months in the Netherlands on a "Working Holiday Scheme", provided you can convince the authorities that your main priority is holidaying, not working. For further information, contact the Dutch embassies in Canberra, Wellington, Ottawa or London.
