Getting around

Almost all of Amsterdam's leading attractions are clustered in or near the city centre, within easy walking distance of each other. For longer jaunts, the city has a first-rate public transport system, comprising trams, buses, a pint-sized metro and four passenger ferries across the River IJ to the northern suburbs. Centraal Station is the hub of this transit system, which is run by the GVB. GVB's remit does not extend to the city's canals, which are mainly the haunt of cruise boats, but there are one or two interesting and reasonably economic options for getting round the city by boat. Amsterdam is also ideal for cycling, but driving – never mind parking – is a pain.
