Things not to miss
1 Perast
• A postcard-perfect Venetian town complete with crumbling palaces and ornate churches. Whilst here, visit the fabulous Our Lady of the Rocks sited just offshore.
2 Njegoš Mausoleum, Lovćen National Park
• Cloaked in beech and oak, Lovćen affords some lovely rambling, though most people come to view this mausoleum of Petar Petrović Njegoš, Montenegro's most celebrated historical figure, from where there are unsurpassed views down to beautiful Kotor Bay.
3 Kotor's Old Town
• Sprinkled with Venetian-Gothic architecture, pretty little churches and quaint squares, Kotor's venerable Old Town is one of the coast's must-see destinations.
4 Kayaking
• One of the most fun ways to explore the hidden coves and beaches of Kotor Bay is from a sea kayak.
5 Cetinje
• Nestled amongst picturesque limestone mountains, Montenegro's one-time royal capital contains some absorbing museums and lovely architecture, including this impressive monastery.
6 Ostrog Monastery
• Dramatically and improbably sited high up in the rock face, seventeenth-century Ostrog Monastery is the country's most important place of pilgrimage.
7 Lake Skadar
• Not only is this beautiful lake the Balkans' largest body of water, but it also offers some of the finest birdwatching in southeastern Europe.
8 Tara Canyon
• Sheer valley walls and a thrashing river have conspired to produce Montenegro's most amazing natural wonder. Don't miss the vertiginous Tara Bridge either.
9 Gulf of Kotor
• Embracing a series of bays, most impressively Kotor, Europe's southernmost fjord is the Adriatic's most arresting natural feature.
10 Whitewater rafting
• The fabulous, foaming Tara River is a first-class venue for this most thrilling of adrenaline-fuelled adventure sports.
11 Stari Bar
• Take a leisurely stroll around these ancient, crumbling ruins, which date back to pre-Roman times.
12 Budva
• The coast's liveliest and most atmospheric resort boasts a delightful Old Town, great beaches and sizzling nightlife.
13 Hiking in Durmitor
• One of Europe's least spoilt mountain ranges, these wild peaks are Montenegro's prime hiking destination, with trails to suit walkers of all abilities.
